In June 2026, Parkfoot installed an Ice Rebus bulk ice vending machine outside its forecourt store in the UK.

Just a few months later, the machine has generated around £6,000 in ice sales. But there is an important detail behind that number: according to Parkfoot owner David Charman, those sales are incremental. The machine has not reduced the packaged ice sales already taking place from the freezer inside the store.

In other words, the location didn’t simply move existing ice customers from one purchasing point to another. It created an additional revenue stream.

Adding More to an Existing Location

For forecourts and retailers, this is where unattended retail becomes particularly interesting. Parkfoot already had the location, customer traffic and an established retail operation. Ice vending added another service customers could access directly outside the store.

Charman also noted that most customers using the dispenser arrive with their own cool boxes. The additional ice capacity has even allowed Parkfoot to use its in-store freezer space differently and expand its frozen food range. It is a practical example of how an existing location can generate more value without simply replacing what is already working inside.

Then Came the Ice Bath Challenge

The Parkfoot team eventually found a very different use for the ice. David Charman and three colleagues took on an Ice Bath Challenge, stepping into near-freezing water to raise money for two local causes: Communigrow and The Trottiscliffe School Association. The challenge raised £1,225. Suddenly, the same machine generating additional sales for the business was also supplying the ice for an initiative supporting the local community. And yes, it looked as cold as it sounds.

More Than Another Installation

For us at Ice Rebus, stories like Parkfoot are valuable because they show what happens after installation. Technology is only part of the equation. Location, customer behaviour, operations and the people behind each business determine what happens next. In Parkfoot’s case, the first few months have already delivered a strong combination: an additional revenue stream alongside existing ice sales, a new convenience for customers and, unexpectedly, a memorable community initiative.

We’re looking forward to seeing where they take it next. Congratulations to David and the entire Parkfoot team — particularly the four people brave enough to get into that ice bath.

Watch the full Ice Bath Challenge and read Parkfoot’s story at www.parkfoot.net

What started as a new way to offer ice at a UK forecourt has become a story about additional revenue, customer convenience — and, unexpectedly, a very cold charity challenge.
